We should beware of our tendency to reconstruct otherness in the image of this society - be it through superficial fantasies about nature and natives or the obverse reduction of nature, other cultures and the past to a universalized version of political economy. This is not a simple matter of "fact" but of interpretation and orientation. Despite problems with some of the testimonies left to us, when we eventually "deconstruct" our social and historical layerings, we find that some deep truths still remain. We come not to a one-sided repudiation of the former incomplete understanding but to a deeper, more rounded view.
